How to Work Toward Your Wellness Goals in Recovery

150 150 Mark S

Creating and sticking to self-care goals can play an important role in your recovery. Practicing self-care is important for nurturing your physical and mental health, encouraging healing, and adopting habits that are conducive to sobriety. Of course, staying focused on your wellness goals can be challenging. Recovered Podcast is here to share some tips that will help you stick to your wellness goals and enjoy a smooth recovery!

Establish Exciting Career Goals

Pursuing a fulfilling career can give your life a greater sense of purpose and meaning, which will help you stay true to your recovery goals. Consider setting a few career goals that you can get excited about! For example, if you’ve always wanted to work as a teacher, set a goal to go back to school and earn a bachelor’s degree in education. You could even enroll in an online course and enjoy an affordable and convenient college experience. If you’re looking for reputable online education degree programs, this may help!

Tidy Up Your Home

Keeping your home clean will help you feel grounded and in control of your life as you navigate the challenges of recovery. Start by getting rid of clutter to make your home feel fresh and spacious. You’ll find it much easier to relax in your home after getting rid of stuff you no longer want or need. If you have kids, encourage them to help with the decluttering process by sorting through their toys. You could even turn your decluttering project into a game by having your kids guess how long it will take to declutter the playroom and setting a timer to see who was right.

Create New Habits

Working toward wellness is all about creating habits that better align with your self-care goals. When your motivation decreases or your willpower fails, habits will keep you going. Aim to create habits that help you avoid relapse triggers and encourage healthy daily activities like exercising and going to bed on time. PositiveHealth.com also suggests overhauling your diet by replacing comfort foods with foods that support cognitive health, cellular repair, and your immune system. Turning these healthy activities into automatic habits will keep you rooted in your healthy routines!

Try Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness meditation is an excellent tool for gaining control over thoughts and feelings, overcoming stressors and triggers, and staying focused on what matters most in the present moment. According to AddictionCenter.com, meditation can reduce depression and anxiety, improve mood, relieve stress, and even reduce the risk of relapse in people with a history of substance abuse. Give mindfulness meditation a try by following along with a guided meditation recording online.

Build Support Systems to Keep You Accountable

Holding yourself accountable is often the hardest part of sticking to health and wellness goals. Instead of relying on self-discipline, enlist a support system that can hold you accountable. For example, consider finding a mentor who has already achieved what you want to achieve. Talk to friends and family about your goals and let them know what actions you’re taking to reach them. You could even join a wellness group or sobriety group to connect with people who will help you stay on track.

Don’t let your addiction define you. Instead, use recovery as an opportunity to create a life that works for you. Go back to school to pursue your career dreams, tidy up your home so you can think clearly, and build new daily habits to solidify your wellness routine. You may also want to develop a mindfulness meditation practice and put together a support system to keep you accountable. Chip away at your goals one day at a time, and you will achieve them!

Substituting Truth Phrases For Whispered Lies – Recovered 1289

150 150 Mark S

To some extent, everyone deals with negative thoughts during early sobriety. However, if you allow yourself to believe your negative thoughts are automatically true, they can become a serious threat to your recovery.

These whispered lies encourage a victim mentality, promote a sense of hopelessness, and keep you from fulfilling your potential. They discourage the growth mindset which is a crucial part of overcoming the challenges faced when you are new.

Tonight, we talk about Substituting Truth Phrases for Whispered Lies.

The Golden Key – Recovered 1287

150 150 Mark S

The Golden Key is a short essay, just 976 words.  The essay is considered a classic of the American New Thought movement.  It was written in 1931 by Emmet Fox who was Irish. The Golden Key is an example of the practical use of the 180 principle. The principle is: Turn your back on the world and its problems and realize that your higher power is real and available for you. Fox has had a major influence on Alcoholics Anonymous.

Tonight, we talk about The Golden Key.

Being Kind to Self – Recovered 1285

150 150 Mark S

When taking the journey toward recovery and sobriety, it’s important to be kind and patient with yourself. Not only does this help you to focus on your goals rather than your past mistakes, but it also helps you to build confidence in yourself and your choices in the future.

For many people who struggle with addiction, being overly critical of themselves is common. Although it is important to acknowledge your faults to help you to establish and accomplish your goals, it is also important to be kind to yourself to move forward.

Contrary to popular belief, being kind to yourself isn’t a selfish act. By understanding your disease and acknowledging your desire to do better for yourself, you are allowing yourself the opportunity to learn from your mistakes.

Tonight, we talk about Being Kind to Ourselves.
