Old Behaviors – Recovered 1073

150 150 Mark S

Think about what comes to mind when you think of patterns or behaviors. Likely it means doing something repetitive, over and over again, often without much thought given to the action. But when you’re in recovery, you can recognize that certain behaviors and attitudes have gotten you into trouble in the past. You learn in recovery that old behaviors from your addictive past have been destructive and that you can make important changes in your new life in sobriety.

Tonight, we talk about Old Behaviors

Our generous Recovered Podcast Community allows us to be self supporting and not rely on outside contributions.  If you would like to join us, there are three ways.

  1. Episode Sponsorship  We will recognize you by first name only at the top, mid, and end of the episode.  Any amount will qualify.
  2. Premium Membership  This is the single most effective way to support the show.  Watch the video in its entirety and learn how to become Premium
  3. Sustaining Partners  We have three ways in which you can participate in this 12-step mission We invite you to be a partner is this work.

Just email me at mark@recoveredcast.com To get on our 2020 International Convention Google group

We are reluctant to change. It may be more that we’re afraid of change, so starting something new is impossible. The fact that others tell us that change is beneficial does little to stop the fear of change. Overcoming the fear is a unique and personal process that we have to go through on our own. This does not mean we cannot rely on the advice and encouragement of others. Indeed, it is in listening to stories that we may be motivated to start making important changes in our own life. So, recognizing patterns is first and foremost the initial step that people in recovery need to take.

What comes first to mind when you hear the expression “Old Behaviors”?
What are some of your old behaviors that were self destructive?

When you were new, how did you learn you needed to change?
What did you need to change to stay sober?
What part of the program helped you identify old behaviors?
What part of the program helped you change old behaviors into new ones?

What stops you from changing self destructive attitudes?
Some examples may be:
Stubbornness: needing to always be right
People pleasing: at the cost of your own happiness or health
Obsessing about perfection
Blaming: inability to accept responsibility for your own mistakes
Procrastination
Inability or refusing to ask for help
Fear of taking healthy risks
Negative self talk
Self guilt and feeling undeserving of good things in life

For you, when an old behavior is recognized, what do you do that is healthy for you?

What is most likely to trigger old behaviors today?
What are your triggers?
How do you replace negative habits?

Do you think about your old self and feel guilt and remorse?
What is stinking thinking?
How do you fight these emotions?

Have you changed an old behavior into an asset?

Setting Boundaries – Recovered 1072

150 150 Mark S

Your issues with boundaries come from your past. You may have grown up where boundaries were strict and harsh. This could lead to an inability to express your feelings or to keep everyone at arm’s length. Having no boundaries will lead to you and others being enmeshed. When this happens, your roles are interchangeable and blurred and you will not establish your sense of identity. As you get older, your relationships mirror those of the past and history begins to repeat itself. As you fall into the same patterns, you increase your risk of experiencing depression or anxiety and may fall into drugs and alcohol to help cope.

Tonight, we talk about setting boundaries

Our generous Recovered Podcast Community allows us to be self supporting and not rely on outside contributions.  If you would like to join us, there are three ways.

  1. Episode Sponsorship  We will recognize you by first name only at the top, mid, and end of the episode.  Any amount will qualify.

Establishing boundaries in your life is important, especially in recovery. By setting boundaries, you no longer allow others to take advantage of you and you begin to find your voice and learn how to use it. Your communication with others improves as you express your thoughts and feelings. Healthy boundaries lead to healthy relationships with people who have your best interests in mind, support and respect you and are willing to work with you. An added benefit is that you begin to establish your sense of self.

First thought?

What Are Healthy and Unhealthy Boundaries?

For you, what is a healthy boundary?
How do you know when a boundary has been crossed?
For you, what family of origin enmeshments do you struggle with?
For you what are healthy boundaries you have developed in recovery and how do you develop these?

How do you know the difference between healthy and unhealthy boundaries ?

For you, what are some unhealthy boundaries you have developed before program?

Family reach out
Sovil media

Here are some possible examples

Telling someone else how to think or feel
Sacrificing your personal values and beliefs to please someone else
Forcing your advice or beliefs on others and pressuring them to follow your advice or think the same
Allowing someone else to define you and dictate your actions
Taking responsibility for someone else’s feelings

For you what are healthy boundaries you have developed in recovery and why?

Here are some examples
Encouraging sharing feelings and thoughts
Honoring your personal values and beliefs even if others may not agree with them
Respecting others
Taking responsibility for all that you do or say
Taking full ownership and responsibility in defining yourself

Today, when are you most vulnerable and allow unhealthy boundaries/

Self Care – Recovered 1070

150 150 Mark S

Once you get sober, it can be incredibly easy to get caught up in the chaos of daily life, and forget that taking care of yourself is not an option, but a priority. Taking care of yourself sounds like an easy and simple task, but the reality is that most people struggle to find healthy ways to take care of themselves, whether they’re in recovery or not.

Tonight, we talk about Self Care

Addiction and substance abuse disorders are quick to take over your life and everything that’s important to you. When you’re in active addiction, drugs and alcohol become your main priority, and the importance of things like physical and mental health, work, school, and family gets drowned out by your need to not be sober.

Once you get sober, it can be incredibly easy to get caught up in the chaos of daily life, and forget that taking care of yourself is not an option, but a priority. Now, back to the show…

Listener Jenny has one year today

Congratulations Jenny and we are looking forward to meeting you at the 2020 convention here in DETROIT!

Tonight, the topic is

Self Care

The idea of self-care doesn’t have to be overwhelming or scary, though it definitely can be at first. In today’s culture, self-care is often thought to be taking a long bath or treating yourself to a new clothing item, but it’s so much more than that. Self-care is different for everyone, and can look like a variety of different things. For some, self-care will be doing the dishes after coming out of a depressive episode, for others, it will be buying a ticket to see a movie after a stressful week. Self-care looks different for everyone, and that’s okay.

Let’s start at the beginning

What first came to mind when you heard that

Self Care was going to be the topic?

How did you do self care before program?

After program?

Now?

Why is self care important to you?

What steps do you work which are self care to you?

Everyone is different and there are different way to do self care.

I have listed are nine basic steps for creating a successful and

balanced self-care plan in recovery.

Let’s talk about them.

Under the category of Physical Self-Care

Exercise

Get sleep

Eat Healthy

Now, let’s talk about Spiritual and Emotional Self-Care

Love Yourself

Relax

Find Balance

Finally, Social Self-Care

Find Support

Talk to Someone

The goal is to keep your mind on healthy things so your life can begin to change for the better. Addiction tends to keep our mind focused on a single thing, the actual addiction. If you can learn to refocus your mind and keep it busy in other areas than it will be easier to ignore the addiction.

What are your first thoughts on this topic?
What do you want to say to the new person about Staying Busing in recovery?

What did you enjoy doing as a kid?
Sports
Band
Scouts
Art
Music
Reading
Collecting
Pets
How did drugs and alcohol affect these activities?

When you were new, was free time a challenge?
Was free time dangerous to your program?
How did you fill your free time?
Was recovery a “hobby”?
Was recovery a “new addiction”?

How about today, how do you stay busy?
Meetings
Exercise
Social Media
Reading
Journaling
Family
Work
Music
Crafts
Automobiles
Baking/cooking
Pets
Church/Higher Power
Gardening
How does that help your program?

Are you too busy?

How do steps keep you busy?
How does your sponsor keep you busy?
How do your sponsees keep you busy?
How does your higher power keep you busy?
How does service work keep you busy?
How do 12-step calls keep you busy?

Triggers – Recovered 1066

150 150 Mark S

One of the long-standing obstacles to recovery is the emotional and physical cues that we experience, which make us feel like using alcohol and drugs. These cues are most commonly referred to as triggers, and they can manifest differently for different people. For some, seeing old friends and loved ones is enough to trigger wanting a drink; for others, the stress of performing well at work or school elicits the old feelings of using performance-enhancing substances. Whatever the cause, triggers should be expected—and like many other facets of recovery, expecting and planning for them is the best course of action for success.

Tonight, we talk about Triggers

Our generous Recovered Podcast Community allows us to be self supporting and not rely on outside contributions.  If you would like to join us, there are three ways.

  1. Episode Sponsorship  We will recognize you by first name only at the top, mid, and end of the episode.  Any amount will qualify.

Identifying a trigger is not always easy as they can sometimes have no direct somatic effect (a physical effect on your body). However, there are several common types of symptoms brought on by an addiction trigger. These symptoms are broken down into categories—physical and psychological symptoms—and knowing about both can help you protect your recovery.

First thoughts?
What are triggers?

When you were new, what triggered you to use?
Exposure to the substance itself.
Seeing other people using.
Contact with people, places, times of day, and situations commonly associated with using (such as drinking buddies, parties, and bars, getting home from work, weekends).
Particular types of emotions (such as frustration, fatigue, feeling stressed out); even positive emotions (elation, excitement, feelings of accomplishment) can be triggering.
Physical feelings (feeling sick, shaky, tense).
HALT: Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired
Emotions
Stress
Over-confidence
Mental or physical illness
Social isolation
Sex and relationships
Getting a promotion or new job
Reminiscing about or glamorising past drug use
Social situations or places where drugs are available

What did it feel like?
Did you ever succumb?
What happened?
Relapse is a process, what does this mean?
How did you fight off triggers early in recovery?
What part of the program helped (sponsor, fellowship, meetings, prayer, slogans, etc.)?

Today, what triggers you to bad behavior?
How do you fight off?

What are some other methods?
Engage in some form of distracting activity.
Talk it through.
Challenge and change your thoughts.

What would you say to the new person about Triggers?
