Being of Service – Recovered 1095

150 150 Mark S

One of the famous sayings used by Twelve Step groups is that you have to give it away in order to keep it. What this is referring to is the idea that service in recovery can help the giver as much as the receiver. This giving should not be done in the hope of a reward or praise. Instead the individual does it because they know that it is helping to keep them clean and sober too. Numerous studies have provided evidence that helping others in recovery provides great benefit to the helper.

Perfectionism – Recovered 1094

Perfectionists hold themselves to rigid standards. If they don’t perform up to these standards, they will often rehash and review, berating themselves for not performing up to par. This often inhibits healthy behaviors resulting in no action because of fear that they’ll mess up. It’s not surprising that perfectionists often procrastinate. Perfectionists might also impose their rigid standards on others and character defects such as anger results when these individuals don’t measure up.

It is not surprising that perfectionists often suffer from anxiety, depression, and eating disorders. Moreover, those who have perfectionistic tendencies often struggle with balance, acceptance, self-care, and self-compassion …the list can go on.

Complacency – Recovered 1092

150 150 Mark S

Complacency can be defined as a feeling of contentment or self-satisfaction, especially when coupled with an unawareness of danger, trouble, or controversy. To say an individual is acting complacently means that they are taking things for granted. When an individual becomes complacent they no longer feel that they need to work in order to find success in life – they view it as something they have already earned.

Those individuals who are recovering from an addiction need to be particularly careful not to take their sober life for granted. If they become complacent they might stop doing the things that have been keeping them away from alcohol or drugs. This could then spell disaster for them.

There is no graduation day in recovery and when people are not moving forward they tend to regress.

Tonight, we talk about Complacency
