When people are grateful for what they have, they will experience a great deal of happiness in their life. When the individual is constantly complaining, it will be impossible for them to find peace of mind.

Gratitude is not about what people have or do not have. There are billionaires who still do not feel satisfied and poor people who feel they have everything they need.

The tendency to feel grateful is a mental attitude that can be developed. It is particularly important that people recovering from an addiction try to cultivate this positive outlook, because it can help to ensure their success in the future.

Where would you like to start
What are you most grateful for?

1. Let’s talk about people in our lives, Who do you appreciate?
2. Let’s talk about how lucky and blessed we are, How are you fortunate?
What difficulties are you grateful for
How do you become grateful
How do you become ungrateful?
3. What material possessions are you thankful for?
4. What abilities do you have that you’re grateful for?
5. What about your surroundings (home/neighborhood/city/etc.) what are you thankful for?
6. What experiences have you had that make you grateful?
7. What happened today/yesterday/this week/this month/this year that you are grateful for?
8. What opportunities are you thankful for?
9. What have others in your life that you are thankful for?
11. What relationships are you thankful for?
12. What are you taking for granted that, if you stop to think about it, you are grateful for?
13. What is there about the challenges/difficulties you have experienced (or am currently experiencing) that you can be thankful for? (e.g., What have I learned? How have I grown?)
14. What is different today than it was a year ago that you are thankful for?
15. What insights have I gained that I am grateful for?

We live in a world riddled with envy. To a greater or less degree, everybody is infected with it. From this defect we must surely get a warped yet definite satisfaction. Else why would we consume such great amounts of time wishing for what we have not, rather than working for it, or angrily looking for attributes we shall never have, instead of adjusting to the fact, and accepting it? And how often we work hard with no better motive than to be secure and slothful later on–only we call that “retiring.” Consider, too, our talents for procrastination, which is really sloth in five syllables. Nearly anyone could submit a good list of such defects as these, and few of us would seriously think of giving them up, at least until they cause us excessive misery.

What are your first thoughts,
what is first to mind,
where do you want to start?

What is envy?
Why is envy bad for you?

How was envy a part of your life before program?
How did envy contribute to your addiction/codependency?
When you were new, how did you recognize envy as harmful in your life?
How can envy contribute to a relapse?

What other shortcomings accompany envy in you life?
How can envy be turned into a good thing?
What basic instinct of life underlies envy?

How does envy manifest in your life today?
What steps, slogans, prayers, actions have helped?

Acceptance is one of the most important tools in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. There are many things that are out of your control, but if you can accept that everything is the way it’s supposed to be at all times, you can truly attain inner peace. This is often easier said than done.

Acceptance can be defined as the act of taking or receiving something offered. In human psychology the word is used to describe a person’s assent to the reality of a situation. The individual is able to accept the reality of what is happening and they do not feel the need to protest it or change it.

What are your first thoughts on this topic?
What does acceptance mean to you?

^*^*^*^*^
Page 417 of the big book:
Acceptance
“And acceptance is the answer to all my problems today.
When I am disturbed,
It is because I find some person, place, thing, situation —
Some fact of my life — unacceptable to me,
And I can find no serenity until I accept
That person, place, thing, or situation
As being exactly the way it is supposed to be at this moment.
Nothing, absolutely nothing happens in God’s world by mistake.
Until I could accept my alcoholism, I could not stay sober;
Unless I accept life completely on life’s terms,
I cannot be happy.
I need to concentrate not so much
On what needs to be changed in the world
As on what needs to be changed in me and in my attitudes.”

When did you first read the Acceptance statement?
What was your reaction to it?

When you were new,
what kinds of loss and disappointments were you experiencing?
How did the spiritual tool of Acceptance help?

In early sobriety, did you try to force certain outcomes
were there some consequences you were trying to avoid?
Did you get the outcome you desired?

In early sobriety, did you struggle against reality?
How does acceptance and reality relate?

What is the serenity prayer?
How does the acceptance statement and the serenity prayer relate?
What is your experience with the prayer?

What does acceptance look like today?

What are you trying to accept today?
What tools, steps, prayers, slogans, traditions, are you using?
