The Big Book
The 12 and 12
24 Hours a Day

Asking for help is fundamental to the program.  .  No one is going to force recovery on you, you need to ask.

We don’t know what you need, you need to figure that out and ask.
But start before the disease, before the program, let’s go way back and see what our experience was like when we were young.
When you were a kid, was it easy for you to ask for help? Like asking for help at school or help with homework?
What was it like before program, did you know you needed help?

Did you ask for help before you came in?
Did you ever ask for help as part of your share at a meeting?  What happened?

In your early recovery, what prevented you from asking for help?

Where you afraid what would happened if you asked for help?
In your early recovery, what kind of things do you ask for?

How do you figure out what you need help with?

Have you ever asked anyone for help working the steps?
Have you ever asked someone other than your sponsor for help on a step?

How do you find someone you can trust when asking for help?

What about therapy, have you tried this?

We have Calls!

How do you say thanks to the person who helped you?

Has anyone asked you for help?  Explain.
Have you asked a group for help?
Have you ever said no to someone asking for help?

What would you say to the new guy?

The Big Book

The 12 and 12

24 Hours a Day

They say if you live a balanced life, you will feel calm, grounded, clear-headed, and motivated.

Since I’m none of those things, I guess I have some work to do to become more balanced in my life.

Let’s go to you first Cristie, what was it life, what happened and what is it like today?

What was your life balance like before the program?

What was the balance of your life in early recovery?

What is it like now?

Why do you need a balanced life?

What does a balanced life mean to you today?

  • balancing physical, spiritual, and psychological

  • exercise, prayer, think about relationships (therapy)

  • social time, other focus time, family time, alone time

Everyone’s balance ratio is different, for example some people don’t have family, so family time is not a factor.

  • What areas of your life need the most attention, where do you most likely get out of balance?

There areas in our life that demand more time periodically.

How do you use the program to balance:

  • work and leisure

  • giving and receiving

  • recovery life and family life

There are events in our lives that put everything out of balance.

My life balance is always changing because my life constantly changes.  Some reasons for change and to redefine balance:

  • relapse

  • loss, or gain, of a driver license

  • relationship break up/divorce

  • death of a loved one

  • dating

  • loss of job

  • marriage

  • children

  • retirement

  • sickness

  • a move

Have you experienced any of these changes and how has the program helped coping and then returning to balance?

  • what steps

  • what prayers

  • what slogans

  • how has a sponsor helped

What would you say to the new guy about balance?

The Big Book

The 12 and 12

24 Hours a Day

The traditions protect the group in much the same way as the steps protect our sobriety

Tradition Two Reads:

For our group purpose there is but one ultimate authority — a loving God as He may express Himself in our group conscience. Our leaders are but trusted servants; they do not govern.

What is a group?

Is this different than a meeting?

What is a group conscience?

How are they held?

How often?

What is the format?

Who runs the group?

Is this hard to believe?

Have you ever had a moment when you were convinced that God must be running the group?

Have you ever had a moment when you doubted God was running the group?

Have you ever started a meeting or organized a group event?

Have you ever fallen into the thought trap that you were the boss?

What happened?

We have calls

What are elder statesmen?

Tell us about their opinions and example.

Are they important?

Do we value them?

Where are they?

Am I absolutely trustworthy, even in secret, with AA Twelfth Step jobs or other AA responsibility?

Do I look for credit in my AA jobs? Praise for my AA ideas?

Do I have to save face in group discussion, or can I yield in good spirit to the group conscience and work cheerfully along with it?

Although I have been sober a few years, am I still willing to serve my turn at AA chores?

In group discussions, do I sound off about matters on which I have no experience and little knowledge?

What would you say to the new guy?

Final Thoughts?

The Big Book

The 12 and 12

24 Hours a Day

Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.

How does this quote pertain to your program?

People may hear your words, but they feel your attitude.

Have you experienced this in program?

Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character.

What does this mean to your recovery program?

Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.

How does a good attitude result in a good program for you?

Excellence is not a skill. It is an attitude.

Thoughts?

For success, attitude is equally as important as ability.

How does this relate to your early recovery?

What does a good attitude mean to you?

What does a bad attitude mean to you?

Why is a good attitude important in recovery?

Why is a bad attitude dangerous?

What was your attitude on life like before program?

How does being dry affect your attitude?

How does being sober affect your attitude?

How does working a program affect your attitude?

Am I an Alcoholic?

150 150 Mark S
There’s a list I keep on my hard drive: “Things I’ve regretted doing while drunk.” Every entry causes me to cringe; some make me cry. I’ve broken five iPhones. Irrevocably damaged two “best” friendships. The worst: One time, when I was 24, I woke up from a blackout naked and in an unfamiliar van. A man I didn’t know was lying on top of me.
The therapist I began seeing after that incident started asking whether I had an alcohol problem. At the time I was stressing out at work, panicking as friends began settling down, and grieving the recent deaths of my mother and grandmother. But the therapist focused on my alcohol use.
“How much did you drink?” she asked.
“Three or four vodka sodas?” I shrugged. Whatever I’d had wasn’t wildly out of sync with what everyone else was drinking.
“Three or four?” she asked. “You could buy a penthouse for that money!”
No, I could not. I rarely ever paid for my drinks. Alcohol was everywhere, from first dates to work-related open-bar events. In fact, the alcohol I had purchased was gathering dust on top of my fridge.
My therapist said she couldn’t continue to see me unless I joined a 12-step program.
So I left therapy.
