Tonight, we will explore recovery in terms of how it used to be like when we were new

All of us have been around a while

All of us have seen changes in meetings

We have seen changes in way people are sponsored

All of us have seen changes in how addictions have influenced meetings

All of us have seen how recovery centers have influenced recovery language and behavior

All of us have seen how the court system has influenced meetings

Tonight we will talk about how things have changed since we were new.

What comes first to mind when you heard about this topic?

How has your recovery program changed since you were new?

What is different?

What is the same?

How about meetings how have meetings changed?

How have meetings remained the same?

Are the issues the same or have they changed?

When you first came in, what did you want to get out of AA?

What was the first thing you worked on?

What was your primary concern?

Today, what are you working on?

What has changed in recovery over the years

What has remained the same?

How has technology influenced your program?

How has sponsorship changed?

How have sponsees changed?

How has the fellowship changed?

How have the courts influenced meetings?

How have drugs influenced meetings?

How has non-smoking influenced meetings?

When people decide to give up an addiction, they are agreeing to make a major change to their life. The benefits of such a dramatic alteration of course can be wonderful, but it will be a step into the unknown.

The individual needs to summon up a great deal of courage and be prepared to let go of their old habits. Once the individual becomes sober it does not mean the process of change is complete.

It continues indefinitely. Anyone who builds a successful life away from addiction will constantly face changes and challenges. It is part of what makes their life away from addiction so wonderful.

First to mind?

When you were new, what was the main thing you had to change?
What was standing in the way of change?
What recovery tool helped?
What did not help?

What was the first thing you changes in recovery?
What was the hardest thing you have changed?

How did your sponsor help?
How did prayer help?
How did meetings help?

What are you trying to change today?
What is in the way?
Why is it difficult for you?

What do you hope to change in the future?
Why are you waiting?
When will you know it’s time?

In our program, it’s our responsibility to make plans.
Making plans help us to achieve goals we may have.
Goals to improve being happy, joyous, and free.
We should just be careful not to plan the outcomes to specifically.
We can make a plan, just be careful that it doesn’t turn into an expectation.

An expectation that is unreasonably high is
a premeditated resentment.
An expectation that is too low is
a premeditated disappointment.
and resentments and disappointments are both dangerous for us alcoholics.

So, we alcoholics need to be careful in this business of resolution making
we need to be careful as we plan our recovery life for the next year.

We need to be flexible as we plan
Our higher power may have a different plan than we have.
My experience, I need to be flexible or else I will be miserable.

Do you have any Recovery Plans for 2018?
What are they?
With the podcast, Premium Membership awareness

In this episode we will cover Step 3. So, listener, we may use some language that may make you feel uncomfortable. We will probably use the word God which may be offensive to some of you. I understand this and I want to be sensitive to your needs and

i don’t want MY understanding of a higher power get in the way of YOUR recovery.

So when you hear me use the word God, maybe try to substitute a concept that maybe more palatable for you, such as Higher Power, the AA group, Spirit of the Universe, whatever concept of a
power greater than you
that is acceptable for you.
Just make sure your higher power in NOT you.

With the first step, we accepted the fundamental problem we face as alcoholics, our powerlessness over alcohol and the unmanageability of our lives.
In the second step, we found the nature of our solution: a Power greater than ourselves who could restore us to sanity.
In the third step, we discover how to make use of that solution by turning our will and our lives over to the care of that power.

Step 3 has been summarized as:
I can’t, God can, I think I’ll let him

The 12 and 12 says,
“… the effectiveness of the whole AA program will rest upon how well and earnestly we have tried to come to a decision to turn our will and our lives
over to the care of God as we understood him.” Steps 1, 2, and 3 are the foundation of our program.

Sounds important, let’s discuss.

Let’s go to you first ?,
What is first to mind on this topic?
where do you want to start?

What does it mean to you to make a decision?
What does the phrase “God as we understood him” mean to you?
What is your concept of your higher power?
What does it mean to turn ‘our will and lives over to the care of God” to you?

What does Self Will mean to you?
What is the difference between a life run on self-will and a life that follows a Higher Power’s will?
What is the difference between Willpower and Self Will?
How well as self-will served you?

What does “self-centeredness is the root of our troubles” mean to you?

Third step prayer
“God, I offer myself to Thee-to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will. Take away my difficulties, that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy Way of life. May I do Thy will always!

Your thoughts

What is a recent example of exercising self-will rather than following your Higher Power’s will?
How can you know God’s will?

The principal in Step 3 is faith.
What does faith mean to you?

How does prayer and meditation help you discover your Higher Power’s will?
How is humility different than humiliation?

What reservations have you had about turning your will over to the care of a higher power?
Is recovery Your Higher Power’s will for you? How do you know?

After you have turned something over to your higher power, have you ever decided to take it back? Explain.

What prayers do you use to get/stay centered in times of difficulty?
