The Big Book

The 12 and 12

24 Hours a Day

Over the course of the next few weeks, many of us will struggle to maintain our sobriety.

We will talk about why it is difficult to remain sane during the holidays,

We will talk about what we did early on to stay safe,

and how we maintain our sobriety now during this festive time.

Also, if you’re new and you haven’t yet been able to quit and

you want this to be your first holiday clean,

we will tell  you about our last holiday drunk and how grateful we don’t have to do that anymore.

If you are not yet sober,

we know that you think you don’t have a choice and that you have to drink,

we understand that feeling.

But there is a solution, and it can work for you this year.

Chrissy, let’s go to you first

What has been your experience? what did the holidays use to be like, before sobriety, what did this season mean for you?

What was your first sober holiday season like?

How did you cope?

What was the most difficult part of that first year?

What do you recommend for the new guy going through his first Holiday season?

How about now, what does this season look like for yuou?

Here are some suggested tips, what do you think, what has been your experience

Tips to Stay Sober During the Holidays

  • Plan Your Days. Let your sponsor or friend in recovery know where you will be, and have their phone number with you in case you need encouragement.
  • Have a Plan B. If you must attend a party or gathering where alcohol is being served, have an escape route or alternative place to go if you suddenly feel uncomfortable around the alcohol, like for a coffee or out to a movie.
  • Be Specific When Offered a Drink. Instead of awkwardly telling the person that you’re a recovering alcoholic, just say “Sure, a Coke/Sprite/water with lemon would be great.”
  • Outsmart the Disease. Stay connected to sober people, places, and things. Don’t go to places serving alcohol if you don’t need to.
  • Take Extra Care of Yourself. Remember to slow down and take some quiet time for yourself during this busy time of year.
  • Don’t Overindulge. Go easy on the holiday sweets, exercise regularly, and don’t try to do too much.
  • Find New Ways to Celebrate Create some new symbols and rituals that will help redefine a joyful holiday season. You might host a holiday gathering for special recovering friends and/or attend celebrations of your 12 Step group.

The Big Book

The 12 and 12

24 Hours a Day

My will

can get me in trouble.

I usually set goals

based on desire.

My higher power wants

to give me what I need

But, I want what I want,

not what I need.

and there is the problem

and I’m left dazed and confused.

My will usually seeks pleasure, avoids pain,

and generally keeps me concerned with

self and not anyone else.

I think my higher  wants me to be concerned for

other people first.

So, I need a program to help me align

my will with God’s will

But how do I do this?

Well, that is the topic tonight

God’s Will and My Will

Cristie, let’s start with you tonight…

Let’s start with Self Will

What do you think “self will” or “My Will” means?

When do you think self will is good for you?

When do you think self will is bad for you?

What do you think is a healthy “self will”?

When do you think when “self will” becomes unhealthy?

How do you think self will and desires relate?

The 11th steps tells us that

we are to pray only for God’s will.

We may have also heard the prayer “Thy Will, not My will”

What do you think Thy Will or “God’s will” means?

Some people say,

the program gives me what I need

Not what I want.

What are your thoughts on needs versus wants

and how they relate with happiness.

Have you ever sensed God’s Will in your life? Explain, how did you feel, what did you do?

How do you use the program to align your will with God’s will?

We have calls!

Socrates once said

“Life contains but two tragedies.

One is not to get your heart’s desire;

the other is to get it”?

let’s talk about this

Have you ever accomplished a goal and it felt empty?

Have you ever attempted to accomplish a goal and failed and you felt resentful?

What happens to you when your will doesn’t match up with God’s will?

Let’s talk about some recovery tools that can help us comprehend God’s will for us.

The acceptance statement and the serenity prayer

Are you familiar with the Acceptance statement on page 417 of the big book?

Acceptance is the answer to ALL of my problems today. When I am disturbed, it is because I find some person, place, thing or situation- some fact of my life- unacceptable to me, and I can find no serenity until I accept that person, place, thing, or situation as being exactly the way it is supposed to be at this moment. Nothing, absolutely nothing, happens in God’s world by mistake. Until I could accept my alcoholism, I could not stay sober; unless I accept my life completely on life’s terms, I cannot be happy. I need to concentrate not so much on what needs to be changed in the world as on what needs to be changed in me and in my attitudes.

How does the acceptance statement help?

What about the serenity prayer?

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

The courage to change the things I can,

And the wisdom to know the difference.

Does the serenity prayer help? How?
